We have been designing isolated footing in a highly idealised manner (as a plate) since long before the FEM become household. The flexture, shear and all that.
At the most, the change the computers have brought in, is applying the subgrade modulus. Can we idealised the footing to be a broom of (bunch of radial struts) compression elements arising at the column base and carrying column forces to the strata. What prevents this broom from opening out, is not the reinforcement an the bottom, but the friction that corresponds to the pressure. In other words the earth is out tension element. I have carried out analysis of footings with 8 noded Solid element. and found that trapazoidal blocks practically have no tensile stresses. Transmission line towers allow unreinforecd concrete pyramids as their footings. Has some body come across any laboratory varification of a similar analysis. shall be much obloged to have your views Himanshu |
